1. Event: China International SME Fair in Guangzhou in China (Sep 15 to 18, 2007)

The 4th China International Small and Medium Enterprises Fair (CISMEF) will be held in Guangzhou City, capital of Guangdong Province from September 15 to 18. Greater Nagoya Initiative will participate in the Fair and host a booth to promote and introduce the attractiveness of Greater Nagoya. Japan has become the third foreign country after France and Italy to co-sponsor the CISMEF. The 4th session will be co-sponsored with Japanese government. The Fair is co-organized by National Development and Reform Commission, Chinese ministries of commerce and finance, People’s Government of Guangdong Province, Japan’s Ministry of Economy, Industry and Trade. The exhibition will have a variety of industrial products such as clothes, furniture, china, Japanese foods, environmental, energy appliances, home appliances, automobiles, auto parts, electronic information products. Within the Japanese pavilion, not only small and medium companies, but major companies, local government, local Japanese companies which expanded business in Guangdong such as Toyota Motor Corporation, Denso Corporation will participate. Non-commercial organizations such as business support service for companies as well as organizations to support foreign investment and tourism will also participate in this event. Last year, approx 4,000 enterprises from 50 countries and regions, 210,000 people attended. This exhibition will be a great opportunity for the small and medium enterprises both in Japan and China to expand overseas market and to further promote the exchanges and cooperation between the two countries.

2. Event: Robot Business Forum in Greater Nagoya (Sep 11 & 12, 2007)

Greater Nagoya Initiative is holding “Robot Business Forum in Greater Nagoya”. This program is designed to connect robotic technology developments to the practical application for business. It is also aimed to provide opportunities to create new business for those developing robotic technologies as well as for those who wishes to utilize such robotic technologies. By the cooperation and partnerships between such businesses, we believe that it will help increase the international competitiveness of the service industry as well as “monozukuri industry (manufacturing with continual innovation and improvement)” in Greater Nagoya. The forum consists of robot business seminar, business-partner-matching meetings, etc. For this event, four overseas companies were invited under GNI Invitation program and they will participate in the exhibition. These overseas companies will have opportunities to meet with leading corporations and have business-partner-matching meetings. Some overseas companies will provide their presentations on their companies, technologies, and services at the exhibition.

3. Event: Messe Nagoya 2007 (Sep 27 & 30, 2007)

Messe Nagoya 2007will be held in Greater Nagoya (Port Messe Nagoya, international exhibition hall). Messe Nagoya is an international trade fair to be held every year and is aiming to create new business opportunities by providing a place to meet with companies from different industrial sectors. This year’s themes are “safety, security” and “comfort”. Last year’s theme was an eco-oriented international trade fair. Messe Nagoya is adopting the philosophy of Aichi EXPO 2005’s theme, ‘Environmental protection with the development of new technologies, and harmonizing life with nature’. Participating companies are focusing on Messe Nagoya 2007’s theme with respect to their products, technologies and services. Together with Messe Nagoya 2007, an exhibition for food industry called “Nagoya Food Festa 2007” will be held within the Port Messe Nagoya. Since the city Turin in Italy and the city of Nagoya is a sister-city, there will be exhibitions on Italian foods as well as local foods. Over 10 corporations were invited under GNI invitation program for these events. They will have opportunities to meet with leading corporations in Greater Nagoya and have business-partner-matching meetings.

4. Event: Greater Nagoya Initiative Symposium (Oct 1, 2007)

Greater Nagoya Initiative hold a symposium every year, aimed at spreading the recognition of Greater Nagoya’s attractiveness as well as to further assist the economic and cultural developments. The symposium for this year is held to further enhance Greater Nagoya’s economy and the attractiveness of its culture. It is part of the “Messe Nagoya 2007 (mentioned in topic 3. above)” program. About 300 people will be expected to join the symposium. One of the topics for this year is “Formation of a global business center in Greater Nagoya for media and contents industry.” Executives of leading companies in contents industry in Japan and in the world are invited as panelists for discussions. There will another topic on “How to vitalize local economy by attracting more and more foreign investors”. Panelists on this topic will be the leaders of local and overseas governments as well as leaders of private sectors in Japan and Greater Nagoya. Overseas companies invited to Messe Nagoya 2007 will also be joining the symposium. The symposium is expected to spread the attractiveness and potentials of Greater Nagoya to overseas companies as well as to the local community.

5. Event: American Chamber of Commerce in Greater Nagoya (Sep 13, 2007).

6. “Techno Plaza”, Research & Development Center of Greater Nagoya.

As described in the topic 2 above, Robot Business Forum will be held on the 12th of September at Techno Plaza. Techno Plaza is located in the northern part of Greater Nagoya called Sweet Valley which is a special zone for a world-leading high-tech industry. Sweet Valley has become a hub for unifying IT, robotics and multimedia-related research through development of facilities such as Techno Plaza and Softopia Japan (a facility for creating the Advanced Information Hub in Greater Nagoya.)

Techno Plaza is a research and development center established in 1998, specializing in research and development of virtual reality, robotics technology and other science related technologies. Techno Plaza was developed with three main functions: generation of new technologies, support for new business enterprises, and training and manufacturing support. The world’s first stereoscopic virtual reality system “COSMOS” (Cosmic Scale Multimedia Of Six-screens) was developed at Techno Plaza. The COSMOS is a six-screen CAVE (Cave Automatic Virtual Environment) system. The stereoscopic computer images are rear-projected on four walls, and the user is surrounded by screens completely. Annex Techno 2 has opened in 2000 to support the generation of new businesses and the digitization of Greater Nagoya industry. Annex Techno 2 has prepared 40 incubator rooms equipped with high-speed and large volume communication by fiber-optic network connection to educate IT related entrepreneurs and companies. In order to cultivate high-tech researchers, they conduct the training for CAD/CAM/CAE and prototyping machines, 3-dimensional measurement systems. These equipments are available for rental. A number of institutions and companies dealing with worldclass VR technology, biotechnology, robot-related technology such as Talkeng Co., Ltd, CMC Technology Development Co., Ltd, Lexus Co, B.I.TEC Co., Ltd have been making use of R&D and incubation facilities in Techno Plaza. Techno Plaza is aiming to achieve advancement and digitization of industry through the “Synergy of IT and Creativity in Manufacturing” policy as a 21st-century style production base and continue to strive for providing state of the art technology.
