=====================================================
This year, Greater Nagoya’s administration, academia, and industry formed a cluster called “Information Robot Technology (IRT) Cluster in Greater Nagoya”. It is formed to assist developments of robot technology to further increase Greater Nagoya’s international competitiveness. This is because has concentrations of corporations with advanced technologies that are supporting Greater Nagoya’s “monozukuri (manufacturing)”. 3. Port of Nagoya, Japan’s Number One Sea Port
=====================================================
The Port of Nagoya serves as the ocean gateway to Greater Nagoya, providing distribution links to approximately 150 countries around the world. The port has grown steadily to become one of Japan’s top international trade ports since its’ opening in 1907. A variety of measures that make full use of the Port of Nagoya’s advantages are being implemented including construction of the next-generation high-standard container terminal and the application of IT systems. The port is celebrating its 100th anniversary this year and has been hosting a number of anniversary events this year including Marine Festival 2007 (July – August).

2006 was a historic year for the Port of Nagoya in terms of cargo trade, as it achieved several new records. The total cargo throughput was 208 million tons, 11.2% increase from 2005. The total trade value (the sum of import and export values) was the largest among all ports in Japan for the sixth year in a row. Port of Nagoya in Greater Nagoya is located in the center of Japan, and is directly linked with an arterial road network which enabled seamless sea and land transport. Recent movements on aircraft industry in Greater Nagoya is promoting “Sea and Air” transport mode in cooperation with the Centrair, (Greater Nagoya’s International Airport). For example, Boeing787 DREAMLINER’s main wings and fuselages are manufactured in Greater Nagoya and the plants are located in the Nagoya port area. These parts are transported to Centrair by sea and forwarded to the United States by air on special cargo planes called, Boeing 747 Large Cargo Freighter. Because of Greater Nagoya’s excellent infrastructure, it makes it possible to ship large aircraft parts just-in-time. This is one of the examples of logistics activities that make full use of the advantages of the Port of Nagoya. One part of the Port provides waterfront recreational facilities such as Garden Pier. It offers the Aquarium, the Maritime Museum, the Italian Village, an amusement park, and a green park and attracts attention as a large-scale amusement sites. Located at an important junction of sea, land and air transport, the Port of Nagoya will be expected to play a crucial role in the thriving industry in Greater Nagoya to better satisfy the demands of port users and local communities.
