1. Tradition: Aged Rice Wine, Daruma-Masamune in Greater Nagoya

The aged rice wine that you can find in Greater Nagoya is unusual. Even in Japan it can be hard to find, but it is well worth the effort. Aged sake has dark beautiful amber color, aromatic, and rich and mellow taste, and does not have a strong alcohol scent. Surprisingly, the particular aged sake can improve your ice cream with deep, rich caramel taste and aroma.
There are many Sake breweries in Greater Nagoya because of the rich geographical features, including the well known Nagara River, which brings fresh pure water to our habitants. Because of the quality of the water, there are many rice wine breweries located nearby. One of the most unique breweries in Greater Nagoya is Shiraki Brewery. Even though the Shiraki Brewery was damaged by earthquake in the past, it was restored and now has a history of more than 150 years of sake production. It produces aged sake products named Daruma-Masamune.

“DARUMA” (Dharma doll) has a meaning deriving from the shape of the doll, “Although it falls over, it always rises.” In a reference from the Kamakura Era (approx.1200A.D.), there is a description of aged Japanese sake, which was matured for three, five or seven years, it is usually described as aged rice wine (Japanese Sake), and it was valued highly by the wealthy. Aged sake disappeared around the end of the Edo Era (approx.1850) because rice was an important Japanese staple and it was not encouraged to use it for people’s entertainment. Also, breweries suffered severe taxation and the culture of aging sake could not survive during that period. By the time the taxation was reformed, the aging sake was already forgotten.
Around 1970, the Shiraki Brewery began trying to reproduce aged sake from the previous era. They started maturing different sakes in different types, in different temperatures, now their aged sake is enjoyed in people around the world, and Daruma-Masamune can be found in the United States, Italy, Germany, etc.)

2. Report: The International Trade Fair, MESSE NAGOYA 2008 (Sep 11-14)
The international trade fair, “MESSE NAGOYA” took place at Port MESSE NAGOYA from Sep 11-14. This fair was aimed at creating a gathering place or a business trading center for local SMEs in Greater Nagoya region. Greater Nagoya Initiative arranged the booth to promote its activity at the fair. The Messe Nagoya was also to serve as a place to make lively business exchanges for local vibrant companies and organizations that are proud of their competitive products, technologies and services. It was also great opportunity to show how Greater Nagoya is full of active Monozukuri technologies.
Many international organizations attended the fair such as Indonesia Investment Coordinating Board, Malaysia External Trade Development Corporation (MATRADE), the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (France). They conducted their business-exchange activities in their own booths along with local companies in Greater Nagoya.
In this year, the theme of the trade fair was “Working on environmental challenges together”. The fair was a great success with 45,530 people attending. The Messe Nagoya made its debut in 2006,carrying on the philosophy of “Nature’s Wisdom”, the theme of the”2005 World Exposition, Aichi Japan” Reflecting needs of changing society and economy, Many SMEs with outstanding technologies will be gathering and conducting business exchanges at MESSE NAGOYA..
3. Event: Nagoya Eco Clean Car Fair 2008 (Nov 7-9)
NAGOYA ECO CLEAN CAR FAIR 2008 will take place on November 7-9, 2008 at Port Messe Nagoya. A comprehensive exhibition of environment-friendly technologies will be held in the center of automobile industry, a wide range of auto-related enterprises will take this opportunity to exhibit their cutting-edge technologies and current products. Exhibitors include companies from overseas and business-matchings with local companies in Greater Nagoya region will be arranged at the fair.
Environmental issues caused by motor vehicles are a leading problem that people need to solve. Greater Nagoya will be the site for the Nagoya Eco Clean Car Fair 2008, and the participating companies will demonstrate advanced technologies for environmental protection and reducing CO2 emissions. The fair is designed to help stimulate replacement demand for fuel-efficient and low-emissions cars and to expand the business market for related products. This fair will also target to bolster innovation for environmental protection technologies for vehicles.
Greater Nagoya Initiative members will promote GN’s local companies and this attractive region to the overseas companies who participate the fair, and also GNI members are keen to discover the overseas companies that are considering launching in their business in Greater Nagoya region.
4. Report: Japan International Aerospace Exhibition 2008 (Oct 1-5)
During Oct 1-5, 2008, Japan International Aerospace Exhibition 2008 took place at Pacifico Yokohama, Japan. Greater Nagoya Initiative had five booths to exhibit activities of the organization with six panels. Co-exhibitors Imai Aero-Equipment MFG. Co., Ltd. and Tokuda Industry Ltd. also exhibited their innovative technologies in the booths.

At the venue, 13 GNI members conducted the PR activities to promote the Greater Nagoya region targeting more than 50 selected foreign companies who were exhibiting at the show. The GNI mostly utilized the Greater Nagoya brochures and other printing materials such as presentation materials, which explain the strengths of the Greater Nagoya, various industrial clusters concentrated in this region, and leading companies, to promote the Greater Nagoya region. The members also took surveys to business related people from overseas companies asking whether those companies are interested in expanding the business in Japan particularly in Greater Nagoya.
Japan International Aerospace Exhibition 2008 is one of the international events that various aerospace-related companies and organizations from Japan and abroad attend in order to activate business opportunities and exchange information in the industry, as well as to contribute to the development of aerospace-related businesses, educate the public about these businesses, and improve the domestic quality of life. Out of 54 foreign companies in attendance, GNI collected more than 30 survey sheets. GNI members will hold the meeting to discuss how to conduct the follow-up activities with the companies who indicated that they would be interested in expanding their business in Japan.
