◇◆ 2. Cormorant Fishing (Ukai) in Gifu ◇◆

Ukai in Nagara River in Gifu Prefecture is one of the most well-known spot for Cormorant fishing. Cormorant fishing dates back to the 1300’s and is a traditional fishing technique where fishermen use trained birds (cormorants) with their natural talents, to catch sweet fish (Ayu). Its season opened officially last month, and will be open until October 15 in Gifu prefecture‘s Nagara River. Nagoya in the LA Times
The Los Angeles Times featured Nagoya and it’s economic strengths in a May 14, 2006 article.
‘For decades, the western Japanese metropolis paled beside the glitter of Tokyo. It was caricatured as a doughty, thrifty factory town – the center for the Japanese culture of monozukuri, or making things. But now the Tokyo economists refer to Japan’s current economic expansion, based on energy-smart innovation, as “the Nagoya boom.” Nagoya-based manufacturers account for roughly half the U.S. trade deficit with Japan. Much like the U.S., Canadian and Australian energy belts, Nagoya has a huge surplus of jobs, with 1.6 positions for every available worker.’

Nagoya Airport is now home two new Airlines.
Two new airline flights are in service at Chubu International Airport (Centrair); Emirates Airlines and Finnair. Emirates Airline started its service as the first Middle East flight from Centrair on June 1, 2006. Finnair also began direct flight between Helsinki and Nagoya on June 4, 2006. Located in the center of Japan, Chubu International Airport uniquely serves as a key access point for both international and domestic flying.
