As announced in our Monthly Newsletter last month, Greater Nagoya Initiative has recently renewed its website. Within the site, “GNI Movies” were added in order to provide information with visual images on GNI’s services, GNI’s major events, interviews with overseas companies’ executives, etc. With the movies on GNI services, you will be able to see how our services are provided to those planning to establish their companies in our region. The executives of overseas companies who visited Greater Nagoya region as well as those established their companies in Greater Nagoya region are interviewed. Japan-China-Korea Industrial Fair 2008 takes place in Osaka, Japan from June 18th (Wednesday) through 20th (Friday) at INTEX OSAKA, Greater Nagoya Initiative will participate in the fair to promote the Greater Nagoya region and represent a vigorous area of business opportunities in recent Japan. The fair is organized by the Japan External Trade Organization (JETRO), China Council for the Promotion of International Trade (CCPIT), and Korean Trade-Investment Promotion Agency (KOTRA), and it aims at promoting and enhancing the economic business partnerships among Japan, China, and Korea. The fair has taken place three consecutive years: 2006 in China, 2007 in Korea, and this year in Osaka, Japan. Greater Nagoya Initiative will have its own exhibition booth to present the attractiveness of Greater Nagoya region for business and industrial opportunities as well as its superb living environment.

The fair will feature several exhibitions consisting of approximately 420 booths for 270 companies and organizations in fields of such as electronics, transportation, general machinery, and IT industries. There will be Industrial Zone and Regional Business Zone. The Industrial Zone is for companies to exhibit their products and services, and government organizations introduce the attractive features of investing in their economic field. The Regional Business Zone is for local municipalities, public agencies, industry groups and other organization promoting interregional business exchanges with China and Korea through enterprise attraction programs.

Greater Nagoya has been turning into a center of aircraft industry, and on April 1st, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Ltd. (MHI) has established a new company, Mitsubishi Aircraft Corporation (tentative name) in Greater Nagoya, to develop and make designs of commercial aircraft, sales, customer support of aircraft such as Mitsubishi Regional Jet (MRJ). There, MHI will start developing MRJ, the first passenger aircraft since the YS11 the successful commercial aircraft produced in Japan 40 years ago. Recently Greater Nagoya has reached approximately a 50% share of aircraft manufacturing, according to Chubu Bureau of Economy, Trade and Industry METI. As well as MHI, aircraft related plants of Kawasaki Heavy Industries Ltd. and Fuji Heavy Industries Ltd. are all located in Greater Nagoya region. All three major aircraft companies and their plants in Greater Nagoya are involved in developing Boeing 787 Dreamliner and 35% of its production. While companies are working on the Boeing 787 Dreamliner, MHI is gearing up the aircraft industry to accelerate the wider the economy in Greater Nagoya.

As for Mitsubishi Aircraft Corporation, the company will be Japan’s first company to manufacture and market original passenger jetliners, and its main office will be located in Nagoya city. MHI Chairman, Kazuo Tsukuda addressed that a characteristic of MRJ is its fuel efficiency, and the jet consumes 30% less fuel because of a lightweight material, carbon fiber composite used for its body. And the aircraft is designed to reduce noise as well comparing to other standard mid-sized jets. MHI President, Hideaki Omiya stated that the MRJ is an ecological aircraft. Although MHI expects to receive orders of the eco-friendly jet from many countries, there are many challenging tasks. The mid-sized aircraft industry in global is competitive, and the future rivals will be Bombardier of Canada, Embraer of Brazil, or companies in China and Russia.

In 2010 (from August to October), an “International Arts Festival” will be held in Greater Nagoya. Greater Nagoya is known as its strength in its economy and industry, but it is also focusing on its art and cultural activities to further strengthen the attractiveness of the area. The festival in 2010 will be the first one to be held in Greater Nagoya, and it is planned to be held once every three years (triennale). A large-scale art complex center called “Aichi Arts Center” will be used as a hub for the festival and is one of Japan’s largest art complexes. Within the art center there are several facilities for arts and culture.. It has eight arts museums and ten art galleries. There are an art theater with 2,500 seats that can be used as an opera house, a concert hall with 1,800 seats, a small hall with 282 seats, eight art museums, ten art galleries, an art library, art information center, and so on.

The main theme of the festival will be exhibitions of the modern arts such as paintings and sculptures. Performing arts such as dance, opera, and music will also be held. It is expected to be a unique international art festival mixing the exhibition of the modern arts and performing arts that people might never have experienced anywhere in the world. There will also be teaching and training programs for young artists and children by the world’s leading professional artists. In October 2010 during the festival, Greater Nagoya will host the tenth conference of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD, COP10). (The CBD was adopted in May, 1992 under the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP) and is setting down rules and agreements on environmental protection as well as conservations for genetic resources.) Since over 4,000 environmental officials and VIPs from 190 countries and regions will attend the conference in Greater Nagoya, there will be a program to entertain and welcome the people for the conference. The festival will be organized by the local governments, business communities, cultural and art organizations, etc.
