Mikimoto Pearl Island is the home of the cultured pearl. Here,on this island in 1893, pearls were cultured successfully for the first time in history using a method developed by Kokichi Mikimoto. Today, Mikimoto Pearl Island is visited by tourists from the world over. Visitors encounter exhibit facilities such as the pearl Museum which tells the entire the story of pearls, and the Kokichi Mikimoto Memorial Hall where one can learn of the life of KoKichi, together with the Ama Stand where visitors can enjoy a pearl diving demonstration. In 1975 Queen Elizabeth IIof Great Britain and her husband were our special guests. In recent years also, we have been honored by the visits of major international figures including those from the worlds of academia and culture. We will continue to welcome the many visitors to this island as a place where Kokichi"s dream of private diplomacy was realized.
