Aerospace industry

From a global perspective, the aerospace industry is expected to expand in the medium and long term due to the increasing demand for commercial aircraft. Meanwhile, the aerospace industry in our country has to enhance itself as global competition is expected to intensify due to the trend of international division of labor and the entry of countries such as China and Russia in aircraft development. Greater Nagoya therefore has established an aerospace industry forum with the cooperation of government, industry and academia. The forum provides support for advancing technologies of the aerospace parts industry, promoting the participation of other industries that have developed innovative manufacturing technologies mainly in the field of automobile production, and cultivating and procuring human resources in the aerospace industry.

In the prewar period, numerous aircraft makers built their factories in Greater Nagoya because of the easy access to timber, the main material used to manufacture aircraft at that time. After World War II, the area developed as the manufacturing base for the Defense Agency. The YS-11, Japan’s first commercial aircraft, was developed and manufactured in the area too. Today, the global trend of the aircraft industry has shifted toward international joint development, and Japanese technologies are highly rated every year. Japan’s share in the manufacturing of airframes has been increasing from 15% for the Boeing 767 and 21% for the B777 to 35% for the B787, the latest model. Japanese companies now take charge of the production of the major components such as composite wings.
